Kvertus Counter FPV Jamming Station, Kyiv Biennale, Between Bridges

Artist and activist Zuzanna Czebatul’s sculptural practice dissects and disrupts the transmission of aesthetic and architectural manifestations of authority and ideology across times and territories. Her long-standing activist practice, since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine characterized, amongst others, by collecting donations and finding means to deliver goods and medicine to the Ukrainian people, inevitably evoked a critical revision of the constitution and circulation of military technologies and, in turn, informed her artistic renegotiations of the compositions of power structures. For Kyiv Perennial, Czebatul generously agreed to the invitation to, for the first time, coalesce her artistic and activist practices: For the exhibition, Czebatul conceived the sculptures Kvertus Counter FPV Jamming Station (2024), titled after a portable device that was of priority to her Ukrainian contacts at the moment of invitation and that she has privately acquired and sent after collecting donations. The Ukrainian manufacturer states that the device effectively disrupts frequency bands employed by commonly used invading FPV (First Person View) drones and other UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles). In December 2023, the counter-drone system was publicly presented at the EDEX 2023 exhibition in Cairo by the National Association of Ukrainian Defense Industries, only weeks after the Russian state company Rosoboronexport has promoted a nearly-equivalent device during Dubai Airshow 2023. At Between Bridges, Czebatul presents a series of 3D prints, in their aesthetic and affective dimensions reminiscent to the eponymously titled military device and situated somewhere in the realm between replica and proxy, monument and specter.

Die Künstlerin und Aktivistin Zuzanna Czebatul untersucht in ihrer skulpturalen Praxis die Übertragung ästhetischer und architektonischer Manifestationen von Autorität und Ideologie über Zeiten und Territorien hinweg und stört diese zugleich. Ihre langjährige Aktivistenpraxis, seit der russischen Invasion der Ukraine 2022 geprägt, unter anderem durch das Sammeln von Spenden und das Organisieren der Lieferung von Gütern und Medikamenten an die ukrainische Bevölkerung, rief zwangsläufig eine kritische Überprüfung der Verfassung und Zirkulation militärischer Technologien hervor und beeinflusste wiederum ihre künstlerischen Neuverhandlungen der Zusammensetzung von Machtstrukturen.

Für Kyiv Perennial stimmte Czebatul großzügig der Einladung zu, erstmals ihre künstlerische und aktivistische Praxis zu vereinen: Für die Ausstellung konzipierte Czebatul die Skulpturen Kvertus Counter FPV Jamming Station (2024), benannt nach einem tragbaren Gerät, das zum Zeitpunkt der Einladung für ihre ukrainischen Kontakte von Priorität war und das sie nach dem Sammeln von Spenden privat erworben und verschickt hat. Der ukrainische Hersteller gibt an, dass das Gerät effektiv die von gängigen angreifenden FPV-(First Person View)-Drohnen und anderen UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) genutzten Frequenzbänder stört.

Im Dezember 2023 wurde das Gegen-Drohnen-System öffentlich auf der Ausstellung EDEX 2023 in Kairo von der National Association of Ukrainian Defense Industries präsentiert, nur wenige Wochen nachdem das russische Staatsunternehmen Rosoboronexport ein nahezu gleichwertiges Gerät während der Dubai Airshow 2023 vorgestellt hatte.

Auf Between Bridges präsentiert Czebatul eine Serie von 3D-Drucken, die in ihren ästhetischen und affektiven Dimensionen an das namensgebende militärische Gerät erinnern und sich irgendwo zwischen Replik und Stellvertreter, Monument und Gespenst einordnen lassen.
